Aloe is derived from the Arabic word “Alloeh” meaning “shining bitter substance”. Aloe vera is mentioned in several instances throughout our history. Queens Nefertiti and Cleopatra used Aloe vera regularly as part of their beauty regimes. Alexander the Great and Christopher Columbus used Aloe gel to treat their soldier’s wounds since it has cleansing and antiseptic properties. Being rich in antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, and other active molecules, Aloe gel is said to help with the functioning of various enzymes in the body that maintain metabolic balance. Salicylic acid in the aloe is said to be responsible for the gel’s anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties.
